On a quiet evening in February 2002, unimaginable horror visited the Bowyer family in Phenix City, Russell County, Alabama. Twelve-year-old William Brett Bowyer, a bright and innocent boy, had his young life violently stolen in one of the most shocking crimes the region had ever seen. What makes this case even more heartbreaking — and extraordinary — is that his father, Forest “Butch” Bowyer, survived a nightmare no parent should ever endure.
A Normal Evening Shattered
It was the evening of February 17, 2002 (some reports reference the early morning hours of February 18). Brett and his father were at home when two men knocked on the door. The men, Michael David Carruth (43) and Jimmy Lee Brooks Jr. (22), were posing as narcotics officers. They used fake documents and badges to gain entry without raising immediate suspicion.
Once inside, the deception turned deadly. The intruders handcuffed both father and son, robbed the home (taking cash and a revolver), and forced them into a vehicle. They drove the terrified pair to a remote road construction site off Highway 431 in rural Russell County.
A Night of Unimaginable Horror
At the isolated location, the situation escalated into pure evil. The attackers had already dug a shallow grave in advance. They first turned on Butch Bowyer, slashing his throat “ear to ear” in a brutal attempt to kill him. Believing he was dead or dying, they then focused on young Brett.
According to court testimony and confessions, Brett was shot multiple times in the head — at least three gunshot wounds. The boy collapsed and died at the scene. The killers then dragged both bodies to the shallow grave, placed Brett’s body inside, threw his father on top, and began covering them with dirt while laughing and joking.
They left them for dead.
A Father’s Fight to Survive
What happened next defies belief.
Despite having his throat slashed and being buried alive under dirt alongside his son’s body, Butch Bowyer refused to die. He regained consciousness, used every ounce of strength he had left, and clawed his way out of the grave. Bleeding profusely, he somehow made it to the road and flagged down a passing motorist for help.
His survival was nothing short of miraculous — and it became the key to solving the case almost immediately. Butch was able to identify the attackers and provide critical details that led to the swift arrest of Carruth and Brooks.
Justice Served — But at What Cost?
Both men were charged with capital murder, attempted murder, robbery, kidnapping, and burglary. The case shocked the community not only because of its brutality, but because the killers had also been linked to the robbery-murder of an elderly couple (Thurman and Katherine Ratliff) just weeks earlier.
Michael David Carruth was convicted in October 2003 on four counts of capital murder. The jury unanimously recommended death, and he was formally sentenced to death in December 2003.
Jimmy Lee Brooks Jr. was convicted in 2004 and also sentenced to death.
As of 2026, both men remain on Alabama’s death row, more than two decades after the crime. Their appeals continue.

Brett Bowyer was just 12 years old — a boy with his whole life ahead of him. He was described as a typical, loving child who trusted the world around him. Instead of growing up, playing sports, or making memories with his family, his life was cut short in one of the most cold-blooded acts imaginable.
His father’s survival came at an unimaginable emotional cost. Butch Bowyer not only lost his son but had to live with the trauma of that night for the rest of his life — knowing he had been buried beside Brett’s body and somehow found the will to keep fighting.
This case remains one of the most haunting true crime stories from Alabama. It highlights the danger of deception, the depths of human cruelty, and the incredible resilience of a father’s love.
Brett deserved protection. He deserved a future filled with joy, not terror.
